If you’ve heard nowt but Game Of Thrones and Young Pope news for the last few months, then you’d certainly be forgiven for having missed the other, quieter, female-led sleeper hit HBO currently has on its hands.
Big Little Lies has been airing for a while in the US, but it’s only just about to start here in the UK next week. We’ve not heard much about it ourselves, but having looked at the cast and crew, we can’t imagine why.
Based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel of the same name, Big Little Lies is a seven-part series that starts by introducing us to best friends and stay-at home mums Madeline Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon) and Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman), who live picture-perfect lives by the seaside and send their toddlers off to school every morning with a spring in their step. But when a single mum (Shailene Woodley) suddenly arrives in the community and enters the pair’s orbit, their idyllic lives start to unravel and murder is soon on the cards.
Big Little Lies doesn’t only have award-winners Kidman (The Hours), Witherspoon (Walk The Line) and Woodley (The Fault In Our Stars), there’s also a strong supporting cast, including Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), Laura Dern (Blue Velvet) and Adam Scott (Krampus), while all seven epiosdes are helmed by Jean-Marc Vallée, the celebrated director of films like Dallas Buyers Club and Wild.
UK viewers will finally have chance to catch up with HBO’s sleeper hit when it starts on Sky Atlantic on Monday 13th March, so you might want to put it in your diary.
Looks like pretty unmissable stuff to us.
