Arrow season 5 finale
The Arrow season 5 finale, Lian Yu, brought this whole mad ride full circle, with Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen back on the island and Manu Bennett’s Slade Wilson back on our screens, as part of a huge selection of guest stars.
Once you’ve watched the episode, you might want to scroll below our spoiler squirrel to see what John Barrowman is saying about it…
So, Barrowman’s Malcolm Merlyn was last seen with his foot on a landmine. He took Thea’s place on the deadly device, opting to sacrifice his life to save his daughter’s. A short while later, we saw an explosion. The implication was clear: Malcolm is dead.
Saying that, they did leave enough of a gap – between Malcolm being on screen and the explosion actually going off – to undo that decision later if they want to.
For now, though, Mr Barrowman seems to be treating this as his character’s proper, final death. He took to Instagram to post this video, saying final-sounding things like “I am very sad to be leaving the Arrowverse”…
As far as we know, then, Barrowman will not return for the already-confirmed Arrow season 6.
According to ScreenRant, Barrowman was telling fans back in April that he wouldn’t be a part of the Arrowverse next season. Merlyn’s season finale death, and the Instagram video that followed, seem to to confirm that.
He’ll be missed, that’s for sure. No one walks into a room ominously quite like Malcolm Merlyn…
More news as we hear it.
