Godzilla 2 starts filming, synopsis revealed

Filming has finally begun on the Godzilla sequel, that’s going by the name of Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. Adam Wingard  (You’re Next, The Guest) is directing the new movie, and the cast was most recently bolseted with addition of Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch to the production.

The official start of production announcement from Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment also adds some more faces to the film, confirming some others that had been linked. Bradley Whitford, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson, Zhang Ziyi and Aisha Hinds are the latest additions.

The official synopsis for the film reads thus:

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

More as we have it.

Godzilla 2 release date

Godzilla 2 is due on March 22nd, 2019. It was originally set for release next June, but after original director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) stepped down from helming the project, the hunt was back on to find the right person for the job, and the film was pushed back a year.

Godzilla 2 cast and crew

Already on board the film are Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Ken Watanabe (Inception), O’Shea Jackson (Straight Outta Compton) and Aisha Hinds (True Blood).

Sally Hawkins and Charles Dance have also joined the cast, with Hawkins reprising the role of Dr Vivienne Graham from the 2014 Godzilla movie. Dance’s role is thus far unknown.

When Gareth Edwards stepped away from directing Godzilla 2 – having helmed the first movie – during production on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the film lingered without a director for a fair old while.

Eventually, Godzilla 2 finally landed a new director in January 2017. Michael Dougherty, who had already joined the project last autumn as a screenwriter, is now also directing as well. Dougherty has previously directed Krampus and Trick ‘r Treat

Godzilla 2 story

Little is known about the story for Godzilla 2 at this stage. We only know that new director Michael Dougherty and writer Zach Shields worked on the current screenplay together, having previously written horror gem Krampus as a team.

We do know that the sequel forms part of the ‘Monster Verse’ that Legendary and Warner Bros are putting together, which Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla Vs Kong are also a part of.
