Riverdale season 2: Skeet Ulrich upped to series regular

Riverdale season 2 cast

The CW’s Riverdale series – which is hosted by Netflix on this side of the pond – will be back shortly for its second season. News nuggets from/about the cast are starting to trickle in.

Today, we’re hearing that Skeet Ulrich – who plays Jughead’s dad, FP Jones – is being upped to ‘series regular’ status. Essentially, this means he’ll be in more episodes, playing a bigger part in proceedings.

“We so loved having Skeet on Riverdale last year, that we couldn’t imagine Riverdale without him,” exec producer Sarah Schecter told Deadline.

“He’s a stellar actor and we feel we have just scratched the surface of who FP is. We are excited to have Skeet continue on this journey and we can’t wait for the audience to see what he is up to this year.”

Also, Jughead actor Cole Sprouse has been teasing what to expect from Riverdale season 2.

“I think the whole show is going to be getting darker and stranger,” the Jughead actor told TV Line.

“We’re going to be leaning into a lot of those qualities that a lot of people ended up loving in the first couple of episodes — this heavy cinematography, this overbearing coloration, this really dark content that’s kind of over-the-top and campy, but it’s taken very seriously,” he added.

It’s been confirmed that Ross Butler will not return as Archie’s enemy, Reggie Mantle. the role will be recast, because Butler’s schedule is too packed.

Butler recently starred in 13 Reasons Why on Netflix, which is also due for a second season in the near future – that’s what’s keeping him from returning to Riverdale.

Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had this to say, CBR reports:

“We want more Reggie on our show — he’s Archie’s rival! — and because Ross is unavailable to come back to Riverdale, we’re looking for a new Reggie. Those are big shoes to fill, but we’re confident we can find an actor who is as funny and sexy as Ross. And of course we all wish Ross the best.”

There’s no word yet on who’ll be stepping into the role, but we’ll keep you posted.

We would expect Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), and the rest of the non-Reggie recurring players to return in season 2.

Riverdale season 2 release date

With the series given an early renewal for its second season, pre-production is already well under way, with cameras preparing to start showing at the show’s home base in Vancouver beginning in late June, so it should be back on The CW in early 2018. We’d expect Netflix to continue hosting the show in the UK.
