It’s just been announced that Channel 4 has picked up the UK rights to acclaimed Hulu drama The Handmaid’s Tale. At present, no air date has been confirmed, but we’ll bring you news on that as soon as it arrives.
The dystopian thriller was created by Bruce Miller and is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood. Hulu released the first three episodes of season one on April 26th and is currently releasing one a week over in the US.
The show is set in the near-future in the dystopian Republic of Gilead where women are subjected and stripped of their individualism. Handmaids are fertile young women who are forced to submit to ritualised rape and bear the children of the ruling class. The series follows Offred, a handmaid, who pledges to survive and fight the unjust totalitarian rule.
Atwood’s novel drew from a number of real-life injustices and events and the theme of resistance has taken on a renewed interest in the current political climate, with Hulu’s adaptation being almost universally praised by critics.
