While many of the Switch’s best titles thus far have been relatively simple experiences perfect for the console’s mobile capabilities, there’s still plenty of demand for grand-scale adventures that can be played for hours on end in front of a television and continued at the player’s leisure wherever they may go.
So far as that goes, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks like one of the Switch’s most interesting upcoming experiences.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the sequel to the hit 2010 Wii JRPG, Xenoblade Chronicles. The original game managed to stand out in a crowded marketplace by virtue of its mastery of classic JRPG conventions, large sci-fi world, and incredible story that featured a variety of characters with unique motivations.
At present, it seems that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will pick up somewhere around where the original title left off by furthering the adventures of key characters while introducing quite a few new characters and plotlines to the fold. It makes sense that the game would continue the adventure that Xenoblade Chronicles began when you consider that this sequel will bring back many of the people who helped make the original title. Fortunately, that includes the original games’ composers who helped create one of the greatest gaming soundtracks in recent years.
Nintendo hasn’t been too generous with plot details thus far, but the latest Xenoblade Chronicles 2 trailer certainly hints at a much larger story that will lead players through a variety of stunning settings.
The thought of playing such a massive RPG on the go was once a simple pipe dream, but Xenoblade Chronicles 2 may just help prove that the Switch is capable of delivering large scale experiences in exciting ways that no other console can match.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is expected to launch for the Nintendo Switch sometime this holiday season.
